Joseph Sellers, Jr.

President & Business Manager, Local 19
Joseph Sellers, Jr. started his apprenticeship as a sheet metal worker in 1980. He became a journeyman four years later. In 1994, he was elected to his first term on the Local 19 Executive Board. Joe was appointed to the position of Training Coordinator in 1996, a position he held for 4 ½ years. He was then elected by the membership to the position of Business Representative. Two years later, Joe was unanimously appointed by the Local 19 Executive Board as President and Business Manager and in June 2003, he was overwhelmingly elected to this same position. In 2006, he ran unopposed and was re-elected to another 3 year term. During his tenure as President and Business Manager, he holds the following positions and offices:
- Co-Chair of the Sheet Metal Workers’ Local Union 19 Pension, Health and Welfare and Annuity Benefit Funds
- Co-Chair of the Sheet Metal Workers’ Local 19 Philadelphia and Central Pennsylvania Joint Apprenticeship and Training Fund
- President of the Pennsylvania State Council of Sheet Metal Workers’
- President of the New Jersey State Council of Sheet Metal Workers’
- President of the Mechanical Trades District Council of Delaware Valley
- President for the Metropolitan Association of Presidents and Business Representatives
- President of the Board of Directors for the National Energy Management Institute (NEMI)
- Secretary/Treasurer of the Mechanical and Allied Crafts Council of New Jersey
- Vice-President of the Philadelphia Building and Construction Trades Council
- Vice-President of the Philadelphia AFL-CIO
- Vice President of the Youth to Youth Market Development Council
- Executive Board Member of the Pennsylvania Building & Construction Trades Council
- Executive Council Member of the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO
- Member of the Pennsylvania State Apprentice and Training Council
Joe is active in civic, charitable and government affairs. After the recent death of Philadelphia Police Officer Charles Cassidy, he organized a fundraiser to benefit the officer’s family. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, he gathered monetary donations as well as clothing and food to be sent to Louisiana. He sent some volunteers from his union to aid in the recovery. He has spent many hours working on community endeavors with the Piney Grove Baptist Church and Community Center and The Potter House Mission.
