Commemorates the Mexican army’s unexpected victory over French forces in the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Celebrated in some parts of Mexico and the United States, Cinco de Mayo, according to UCLA, “came to represent a symbol of Mexican unity and patriotism…[and] has become more of Chicano holiday than a Mexican one.
